October 2007 VIJUG meeting – Jonathan Purdy from Oracle

I have the great pleasure of announcing a well organized meeting with a great speaker for October. Jonathan Purdy of Tangosol/Coherence fame will talk about “Orchestrating Messaging, Data Grid and Database for Scalable Performance”. We will have access to a great venue with plenty of space so make sure to bring your friends and colleagues along and get them to join VIJUG. Please also note that you will need to preregister for the event with a simple email.

Presentation:

Orchestrating Messaging, Data Grid and Database for Scalable Performance

Recent years have seen a surge in the number of tools available for building high-scale systems. In the areas of messaging, data grids and databases, many products combine high availability and horizontal “scale-out” across multiple machines. Additionally, advanced architecture types such as Recovery-Oriented Computing go one step further in minimizing dependence on any of these products. The overlap between these approaches, and the number of possible combinations, raises these questions — “How do I know which combination of technologies to use?” and “How do these technologies work together?”

This presentation compares and contrasts these options, identifying where each technology fits, doesn’t fit, and even when to use a technology that’s not the best fit. We will further explore how to integrate these components while understanding the tradeoffs between performance, scalability and reliability.

  1. So we had another record breaking meeting! In the end we had 36 people in the audience. Abebooks overwhelmed us all with a lavish buffet with pizza, sandwiches, veggies, chips and desserts. Wow. After my short introduction Jon did his presentation about datagrids. The presentation was very interesting and well presented. It was quite high level so all of us walked away with an understanding of what a datagrid is as well as some interesting view about databases, appservers, object database and jini/java spaces. It is enlightening to talk to somebody who has experience with a totally different problem space in terms of load and through out compared to what most of us do every day. For Jon anything with only a few hundred concurrent transactions per second is a small system! Unfortunately this resulted in a bit of a disconnect with not too many questions during the presentation. However the discussions amongst attendants as well as with Jon were very busy.

All summed up we had a great meeting and I hope we have some more repeat meeting attendants. I already have 3 presentations for upcoming meetings. Stay tuned.

  2. Oh.. and I totally forgot. We had a well anticipated raffle with lots of us walking away with DVD of the Oracle Fusion Middleware and lucky Grant winning an ipod.
